Approval of \u201cFinBIF 2.0 \u2013 Second Construction Cycle of the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility\u201d was <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aka.fi\/en\/about-us\/media\/press-releases\/2018\/academy-of-finland-grants-12m-towards-research-infrastructure-development\/\">announced<\/a><\/span> by the Academy of Finland on Dec. 11 in Helsinki. It includes the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit at the University of Oulu, that has been promoting DNA barcoding activities across Finland as a member of the International Barcode of Life (iBOL) Consortium since 2011. With the Academy\u2019s support of \u20ac387,000 from the FinBIF 2.0 project and internal resources, Oulu will receive \u20ac553,300 ($849,620 CAD) to advance the completion of a DNA barcode reference library for the Finnish flora and fauna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 40px;\">Marko Mutanen, Senior Curator at the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit at Oulu and coordinator of Finnish Barcode of Life (FinBOL), said: \u201cFinland is at the forefront of a comprehensive DNA barcode reference library for biota at a national level. Currently, about <g class=\"gr_ gr_15 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"15\" data-gr-id=\"15\">one half<\/g> of the species documented from Finland have at least a single reference barcode. The Laji.fi portal enables visitors to browse, record, <g class=\"gr_ gr_17 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"17\" data-gr-id=\"17\">share,<\/g> and download information and observations about species distribution and occurrences. Currently, <g class=\"gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"10\" data-gr-id=\"10\">FinBIF<\/g> shares over 30.7 million observations on more than 33,000 species from 180 information sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 40px;\">In March 2018, the Academy of Finland \u2013 an agency within the administrative branch of the Finnish Ministry of Education, Science and Culture \u2013 asked for proposals for 2018: Infrastructures on Finland\u2019s Roadmap as part of Finland\u2019s Strategy and Roadmap for Research Infrastructures. \u20ac12 million was provided to eight beneficiaries with nationally significant research infrastructures that promote cutting-edge research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent: 40px;\"><em>\u201cThe top score received by FinBIF in the international evaluation reflects the strength and maturity of the implementing Consortium.
