global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The CBG\u2019s <strong>Dr. Jeremy deWaard<\/strong> and Ph.D. student <strong>Danielle (Dani) Nowosad<\/strong> visited Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk, Nunavut, this April to prepare for <a href=\"https:\/\/arcticbioscan.ca\/\">Arctic BIOSCAN<\/a>\u2019s 2022 field season and meet with several key partners of the community-based Arctic biomonitoring project.<\/p>\n<p>DeWaard and Nowosad met with important community partners at the <strong>Ekaluktuttiak Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO)<\/strong> and the <strong>Kugluktuk Angoniatit Association<\/strong> where they exchanged project results and discussed priorities and plans for Arctic BIOSCAN.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;3_5,2_5&#8243; said deWaard, Associate Director of Collections and Arctic BIOSCAN\u2019s Project Manager at the <a href=\"biodiversitygenomics.net\">Centre for Biodiversity Genomics (CBG)<\/a>. &#8220;This has been challenging through the pandemic, so we were thrilled to meet in person again and receive valuable input and guidance over a cup of tea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They also met with Arctic BIOSCAN team members <strong>Carter Lear<\/strong> and <strong>Liam Mulgrew<\/strong>, two of six Nunavummiut youth that will be hired across five Kitikmeot communities to work as field technicians this summer. Supported by new funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/soifoundation.org\/en\/\">SOI Foundation<\/a>, the youths will play an integral role in Arctic BIOSCAN\u2019s research activities.<\/p>\n<p>Past and current research activities would be impossible without the science support provided by partners in Cambridge Bay and across the Kitikmeot Region. <strong>Elise Imbeau<\/strong> and <strong>Gabriel Ferland (Viventem)<\/strong> supported the research in 2021 when travel restrictions prohibited CBG researchers from conducting fieldwork. Similarly, colleagues at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/polar-knowledge\/CHARScampus.html\"><strong>Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS)<\/strong><\/a>, such as Laboratory Manager <strong>Martin L\u00e9ger<\/strong>, have been pivotal in providing access to the resources and infrastructure necessary to complete such an ambitious project. They were joined virtually by <strong>Dr. Ian Hogg<\/strong>, Team Lead of Ecosystem Science at POLAR, and <strong>Dr. Dan Bock<\/strong>, CBG&#8217;s Project Manager for <a href=\"https:\/\/bioscancanada.org\/\"><strong>BIOSCAN-Canada.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I often think of the adage \u2018it takes a village to raise a child\u2019 when describing Arctic BIOSCAN,&#8221; said deWaard. &#8220;The project\u2019s co-creation and implementation has involved a wide cast of individuals and partner organizations \u2013 our HTO partners, our POLAR colleagues, our Nunavummiut and CBG team members, our varied funding sources \u2013 all have been crucial since the beginning in fostering this project.
