Elizabeth Maruma Mrema has been appointed as the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Ms. Mrema joined the CBD Secretariat in Montreal (Canada) in December 2019 as Acting Executive Secretary.<\/span><\/p>\n

An environmental lawyer with extensive experience working for the UN Environment Programme, Ms. Mrema takes the CBD leadership at a critical time. Planned to be the Super Year of Biodiversity with a new global biodiversity framework negotiated by the end of the year, 2020 and its COVID-19 pandemic brought unforeseen challenges and delays. Ms. Mrema\u2019s priority will be to ensure the continuation of the negotiation process for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. <\/span><\/p>\n

The iBOL Consortium congratulates Ms. Mrema for her new appointment and is looking forward to sustaining the ongoing partnership<\/a>\u00a0and supporting Parties and the CBD Secretariat during and after the transition to the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.<\/span><\/p>\n
