Biesmeijer is also head of Naturalis Biodiversity Center\u2019s pollinator ecology research group and a professor at Leiden University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 18 million Euro consortium is led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalis.nl\/en\">Naturalis Biodiversity Center<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uva.nl\/en\">University of Amsterdam<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utwente.nl\/en\/\">University of Twente<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wi.knaw.nl\/\">Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute<\/a>. It is one of seven projects funded by the Netherlands Research Council\u2019s 93-million-euro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwo.nl\/en\/documents\/nwo\/permanent-commission\/roadmap-large-scale-scientific-infrastructure\">National Roadmap for Largescale Scientific Infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By employing rapidly evolving DNA-based methods and technologies, audio and visual recognition tools, and radar data, ARISE will assess biodiversity across the Netherlands\u2019 41,550 km<sup>2<\/sup> landscape. It will have tremendous impact not only in the Netherlands, but will also contribute greatly to the global research program, <a href=\"https:\/\/ibol.org\/programs\/bioscan\/\">BIOSCAN<\/a> \u2013 a six-year project launched last June by the International Barcode of Life (iBOL) Consortium to track multicellular life in 2,000 sites across the planet.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;3_5,2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;0px|0px|0|0px|false|false&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.4&#8243; text_font=&#8221;||||||||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||18px|||&#8221; text_font_size_tablet=&#8221;&#8221; text_font_size_phone=&#8221;16px&#8221; text_font_size_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID-19 has provided us with a harsh reminder that we must become much better at managing biodiversity. The proposed infrastructure also brings together many new insights in the fields of artificial intelligence and data science.\u00a0 \u201cThis wouldn&#8217;t have been feasible even ten years ago,\u201d said Joost Kok, Dean at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Twente.<\/p>\n<p>The ARISE data will open up new opportunities for understanding ecosystem function, identifying trends, and informing biodiversity-based solutions for major societal challenges such as the circular economy, nature-inclusive cities, and the agricultural cycle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe loss of biodiversity is one of the chief threats to humanity&#8217;s survival. For this reason, we urgently need better instruments for species identification and for monitoring biodiversity.
