Launched in April 2019, the Sequel II generates 8x more sequence data (50 billion base pairs per run) than its antecedent. By delivering millions of high fidelity sequences, this platform can gather DNA barcode records from 40,000 individual specimens in an 8-hour run. Exploiting this capacity, the CBG will analyze millions of specimens in 2020.

Paul Hebert, Director of the CBG, noted that “The Sequel II represents a key component in the support infrastructure for BIOSCAN, a new seven-year $180 million research program which will advance our understanding of biodiversity by accelerating species discovery, and by revealing species interactions and dynamics. Given our plans to barcode tens of millions of specimens, it’s critical that analytical costs be reduced and the Sequel II makes this possible while also delivering very high fidelity sequences.” BIOSCAN is led by the International Barcode of Life Consortium, a global group of scientists and research organizations united by the shared mission of employing DNA barcodes to enhance understanding of planetary biodiversity.

“One of the most important challenges facing the globe is the decline in biodiversity and finding ways to catalog and protect the planet’s flora and fauna. These difficult challenges require new tools and focused efforts like the important work of the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics and the International Barcode of Life Consortium,” said Dr. Jonas Korlach, Chief Scientific Officer, Pacific Biosciences. “PacBio is very proud that our latest DNA sequencing technology on the Sequel II System has been selected to advance this important work.”
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://ibol.org/site/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/IMG_6317-scaled-e1576184112484.jpg” _builder_version=”4.0.9″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”https://ibol.org/site/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Sequel-II-4X-36K-amplicons-heatmap.png” _builder_version=”4.0.9″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.9″]
SEQUEL II run of 36K amplicons, visualized as a heat map.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”45px|0px|67px|0px|false|false”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.7″ link_font=”|||||on|||”]
Links:
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”3.22.2″][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″ background_color=”#a8d367″ custom_padding=”67px|0px|0|0px|false|false” border_style_top=”double”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”||||||||” text_orientation=”center” text_font_size_tablet=”” text_font_size_phone=”16px” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|desktop”]
Media Contact:

International Barcode of Life Consortium
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” _builder_version=”3.25″ background_color=”#a8d367″ custom_padding=”0px||” custom_padding_tablet=”8px|||0px” custom_padding_phone=”0px|||0px”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”Abel||||||||” link_font=”||||||||” link_text_color=”#646564″ header_font=”||||||||” text_orientation=”center” module_alignment=”right” custom_padding_tablet=”” custom_padding_phone=”20px||” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone”]

Hannah James
Manager – Media and Strategic Communications
hjames@ibol.org
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″ background_color=”#a8d367″ module_alignment=”center” custom_padding=”0|50px|67px|50px|false|false”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font=”||||||||” text_orientation=”center” text_font_size_tablet=”” text_font_size_phone=”15px” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|desktop”]
The International Barcode of Life (iBOL) Consortium is a research alliance with a mission to develop and apply a globally accessible, DNA-based system for the discovery and identification of all multicellular life.
