Member nations are networks of researchers and organizations in a country that are engaged in or supporting DNA barcoding as part of iBOL. They are composed of leading researchers and representatives of the key organizations supporting the discovery and protection of national biodiversity.<\/p>\n

GOVERNANCE<\/h2>\n

Established in 2008, the Board for iBOL functions in a strategic capacity, reviewing research progress and providing suggestions on how to accelerate it. In addition, a Science Committee comprised of one researcher from each participating nation aids in the design and implementation of research activities.<\/p>\n

Board of Directors<\/h2>\n

Throughout its first five years, iBOL\u2019s Board of Directors was composed of representatives from funding agencies involved in supporting the consortium. Science Committee<\/h2>\n

The Science Committee (SC) is comprised of one researcher from each participating member nation. They aid in the design and implementation of research activities including those related to DNA barcoding applications, bio-surveillance, and reference library building. Although the SC is primarily focused on coordinating research activities, it is also responsible for selecting the location for the biennial International Barcode of Life conference.<\/p>\n

Foundation of iBOL<\/h2>\n\"\"\n

The classification system for life formalized<\/h3>\nIn the 265 years since Linnaeus first started classifying organisms, taxonomists have formally described fewer than two million species. Current approaches to the study of biological diversity are seriously hampered by the limited ability of humans to recognize and recall morphological variation.\n\nFew taxonomists can reliably diagnose even 1,000 species and that means that we will need up to 100,000 taxonomists simply to sustain the ability to recognize Earth's estimated 10 million species, once they have all been described.\n

Species identification using DNA barcoding<\/h3>\nDNA barcoding is proposed as a new system of species identification. It uses a short genetic sequence from a standard part of the genome - the DNA barcode - analogous to the way a supermarket scanner distinguishes products using the black stripes of the Universal Product Code.\n\nTraditionally, taxonomists identify biological specimens using morphological features or \"keys\". But if a specimen is damaged or in an immature stage of development - the larva of a wasp, for example - even an experienced taxonomist may be unable to make an identification. Barcoding would eliminate these difficulties.\n\nThus in addition to being a simple yet innovative tool for non-experts needing to make a quick identification, DNA barcoding helps taxonomists with hard-to-identify specimens.\n

A global collaboration for biodiversity<\/h3>\nThe promise of accurate, rapid and inexpensive species identification captured the attention of taxonomists, geneticists and evolutionary biologists around the world. After two exploratory workshops in 2004 and an international barcoding conference in London the following year, delegates from 25 countries traveled to Guelph in June 2007 to discuss a proposed \"United Nations of barcoding\" - a global collaboration of biodiversity scientists that would create a DNA barcode reference library for all multicellular life.\n\nThe response was positive and efforts began to establish a committee in each country to oversee the participation of its researchers and to lead the quest for funding.\n

The launch of the International Barcode of Life (iBOL)<\/h3>\nRapid progress was made and in July 2009, work began on establishing the administrative structures and finalizing the research plans of the International Barcode of Life (iBOL) project. This ramp-up phase would set the stage for the formal activation of the iBOL in October 2010.\n\nThe main mission of this first phase of the iBOL is to extend the geographic and taxonomic coverage of the barcode reference library -- Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD) -- storing the resulting barcode records, providing community access to the knowledge they represent and creating new devices to ensure global access to this information.\n

500,000 species barcoded<\/h3>\nIn five years, the first phase of the iBOL has barcoded 500,000 species, reflecting the investment of $150 million by research organization in 25 nations.\n
